Cloves

Zanzibar has been the main exporter of cloves for the last 150 years.  The plantations that were established were from Slave labour but today has smaller holdings within the community.

The problems that have existed during this century has been tree disease, ageing tree populations and occasional neglect of trees.  Replanting has been crucial to the maintenance of the industry and this has been attained by government assistance.  In the World Market  Zanzibar faced little competition in the clove market until recently and this is now being aggravated by increasing self-sufficiency in Indonesia.   The future of the Clove industry in Zanzibar will depend on how it copes with problems associated with growing cloves and remaining competitive world market.
