Some interesting facts...... coffee was introduced to Sri Lanka
before Tea was. It was a fungal disease that caused the demise of the
Coffee plantations...due to the disease setting in they were never able
to revive the coffee plantations.... Luckily the tea plant the British brought in from China thrived...........
Tea was introduced to India and Sri Lanka because the British did not want China to have the monopoly on Tea!
The East
India Company(1600-1874) at its height controlled 50% of the World
Trade. They traded mainly in cotton, silk, indigo, dye, salt, tea and saltpetre. Ironically it was bought by an Indian in 2005 from private
investors.
